Impact of open sea deep convection on sediment remobilization in the western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Martin, Jacobo; Miquel, Juan-carlos; Khripounoff, Alexis.
The northwestern Mediterranean is known to be a privileged area of deep water formation via dense shelf water cascading and offshore convection. The impact of the former in the sedimentary dynamics of the deep basin has been highlighted in recent years, while open sea convection has been solely studied from a hydrological perspective. Particle fluxes and hydrodynamics were monitored at the DYFAMED site (Ligurian Sea, western Mediterranean) at 200, 1000 m and near the seafloor (2350 m depth) during winter 2005-2006. From February to April 2006, and in coincidence with an unusual episode of deep water formation, a notable intensification of currents was observed in the entire water column and near-bottom particle flux increased up to two orders of magnitude....

Remises en suspension sédimentaires observées en Méditerranée par 2 000 m de profondeur à l'aide de pièces à particules ArchiMer
Crassous, Philippe; Khripounoff, Alexis; Larosa, Jacques; Miquel, Juan-carlos.
Four sediment traps of two different types and two current meters were deployed fixed to two identical moorings, at a depth of 2 000 m, off the coast at Nice, for 70 days between April and June 1987. The particulate flux measured with sediment traps decreased from 1 000 to 95 mg/m2/day during this experiment. The carbonate carbon concentration of the particles also decreased during this period; organic carbon concentrations varied inversely with the flux, increasing from 1.8 to 3.7 % of the particle dry weight. It is concluded that these changes reveal the presence of a deep-sea storm with a significant resuspension of sediment to a height greater than 200 m (distance of the traps from the bottom). By the end of the experiment, identical sediment traps had...

Vertical export flux of metals in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Heimbuerger, Lars-eric; Migon, Christophe; Losno, Rémi; Miquel, Juan-carlos; Thibodeau, Benoit; Stabholz, Marion; Dufour, Aurelie; Leblond, Nathalie.
We examined metal (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) and particulate organic carbon (OC) concentrations of the marine vertical export flux at the DYFAMED time-series station in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. We present here the first data set of natural and anthropogenic metals from sediment trap moorings deployed at 1000 m-depth between 2003 and 2007 at the DYFAMED site. A highly significant correlation was observed between most metal concentrations, whatever the nature and emission source of the metal. Cu, Zn and Cd exhibit different behaviors, presumably due to their very high solubility and complexation with organic ligands. The observed difference of atmospheric and marine fluxes in terms of temporal variability and elemental...
